FGD Scrubber System

What does an FGD Scrubber Do?

The 1990 Clean Air Act and its subsequent amendments mandated that coal fired power plants reduce their emission of sulfur dioxide gases. A typical flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber system is shown below. The by-product of many of these FGD scrubber systems is a slurry consisting of calcium sulfite dihydrate (synthetic gypsum) and water. This by-product can be recycled via a gypsum dewatering plant to be used in the wallboard, Portland cement, fillers and agriculture.
